About

What is Aikido?

Aikido is a Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba (often referred to by his title 'O Sensei' or 'Great Teacher'). On a purely physical level it is an art involving some throws and joint locks that are derived from Jujitsu and some throws and other techniques derived from Kenjutsu. Aikido focuses not on punching or kicking opponents, but rather on using their own energy to gain control of them or to throw them away from you. It is not a static art, but places great emphasis on motion and the dynamics of movement.

Why is Aikido?

Why is Aikido?

There are many reasons why aikido is a great choice for anyone looking to improve themselves. Unlike many other martial arts, aikido emphasizes compassion and non-violent conflict resolution, making it a great choice for people of all ages and backgrounds. Practicing aikido can also be a great way to build a sense of community and belonging, as you get to train alongside other like-minded individuals who share your passion for the art.

Who is Aikido?

Aikido is You! Anyone can practice Aikido, regardless of age, gender, or physical ability. Aikido is a martial art that emphasizes technique, rather than brute strength, making it accessible to a wide range of people.  Just interested in besting people up? Aikido probably isn't for you.

But if you're looking to learn effective self-defense, better awareness in any situation (not just physical confrontations), and make yourself and the world around you better, give aikido a try. Aikido is NOT easy, and most are not disciplined enough to stick with it, but if you're willing to meet the challenge, you CAN make it, and the instructors and students of Seibukan Aikido will help you every step of the way!
